Retired Flags

The U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home would like to recognize the American Legion Post 294 for their participation in retiring American flags while simultaneously honoring veterans. Post 294 had been retiring flags for the community through educational events and through Boys Scouts for years.

Unfortunately, those educational opportunities often didn’t keep up with the influx of flags requiring retirement. Post 294 reached out to the funeral home after researching other ways to honorably retire flags. The traditional way of honoring a veteran during a funeral service is by having an American flag drape the casket. When there is a cremation there is no casket to drape.

U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home has agreed to honor veterans by offering the service to the families of draping the deceased with a retiring flag during the cremations process. This is an honorable final tribute to both the veteran and the flag. Many funeral homes offer this service throughout the United States. We’re happy to partner with American Legion Post 294 to offer this locally. This service would not affect any flag benefit offered by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

We are honored to offer this service. You may drop off your tattered flag at the U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home.
